Armenian Citizenship

Armenian citizenship under the simplified procedure is designed for those returning to their roots. It does not require a minimum residency period or proficiency in the Armenian language. However, providing documentary evidence of your ethnic origin is mandatory. The requirements for supporting documents are often stringent, depending on the degree of kinship and compliance with established legal standards.

Obtaining Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia

We have outlined the key stages for you. A more detailed discussion of your specific case is available during a consultation.

1. Application Submission

Applications for Armenian citizenship can be submitted at the Passport and Visa Department in Yerevan or at Armenian Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Personal presence is mandatory for the submission. Appointments for filing documents must be scheduled in advance, whether you are applying in Yerevan or abroad.

2. Processing Period

The standard processing time after submission in Yerevan is 90 working days. If applying through an Embassy or Consulate, additional time is required for document courier services to Yerevan. The total duration may also vary depending on the country of application. Please note that all citizenship applications are processed exclusively in Yerevan. The document acceptance procedure in Yerevan is identical to that at any Embassy or Consulate.

3. Obtaining the Passport

Once the Presidential Decree is signed, the applicant must exercise their right to the simplified passport issuance process to finalize their citizenship. This involves submitting a separate passport application, followed by taking the Oath of Allegiance and receiving the passport. This stage requires personal presence and cannot be completed via a Power of Attorney (PoA), whether in Yerevan or at an Embassy/Consulate.

4. Passport Issuance Timeline

In Yerevan, the passport can be issued in as little as two business days (minimum timeframe with expedited service fees), provided the applicant is not subject to military registration. If military registration is required, the process may take longer. In Embassies or Consulates, the issuance timeline is approximately three months or more, with longer wait times for those subject to military registration and depending on the specific country of application.

Additional Information
For Men

Men born after May 26, 1971, are required to register for military service. When obtaining a passport in Armenia: You must complete the military registration in person at the local military commissariat. The processing time for these documents depends on the specific district office. When obtaining a passport abroad: If you receive your passport through an Embassy or Consulate, military registration is conducted remotely, and a physical visit to Armenia is not required.
